Turning Japanese?
Just minding my own business, doing some kanji practice; and then suddenly a plate of norimaki hovers into view...

City Screen
These new vertical screens have been popping up around town. Seems they are mostly for commercials, even though there is a touristy "i" on top. The setup would be ideal for public emergency announcements and such too. And if they indeed are connected to some network, how long will it take for someone to hack it?

Living in a Movie Set
Some French movie was eing shot today around here, and they had reserved our street for the crew caravans. Nice day to shoot on too: +1 and sleet/rain pouring down. No need for special effects here. Very authentic.

Cold Office
Two weeks ago I was sipping cappucinos in some fancy offices in Stockholm. Today it was black coffee in a dark and cold warehouse outside Helsinki. Great job I have, seriously.
What was I doing all day in a warehouse? Assisting with user tests.

Glass Cage Teddies
Somehow mixing a fluorescent tube with dust and small furry toys in an enclosed space just makes me think "fire risk".

Good Morning
Is there a better way to start the week than having your toilet seat ripped out by some guy before 9 in the morning?
At least he's promised to put it back on, and make it less leaky.

Brand Dot on Door
The question arose wheter using the red dot from the company logo is the best choice for all locations. Case: Meeting room door. Sure, it has the meaning of "do not enter" when the door is closed, but the problem is that it's constantly sending out this message. Also to people who should enter.

Colour Splash
Winter flying is a colourful affair. Ended up with an orange fuselage and greenish wings. All courtesy of Helsinki-Vantaa de-icing service.
...Is Estimated to...
A bit of snow put the excitement back into flying. Blue1 got me to Stockholm almost 2 hours late. A colleague who chose Finnair didn't get here at all.

UWSSOC @Tavastia
Apart from Underwater Sleeping Society acts included Rubik, Kastor and a final stage jam by everyone and their friends. Good show.

Hot Stuff
Korean instant noodles, gotten straight from the source. Spicy enough to feel worried about the plumbing when pouring the leftovers down the drain.

End of the Big Ships
Soon there will be less excitement in the neighbourhood, as the harbour is moving out to Vuosaari, and the big ships with it. No more moving walls at the end of the street, and no more wondering when the next one will run up on one of the nearby islands (like MS Inowroclaw did a few weeks ago).

Integrated
Van blinkers working also as warning lights for road construction. Great for undercover hole makers.

Art on Board
For the culturally inclined, Rossignol had brought out an art exhibition complete with bio's, original artworks, and the ski it ended up on.
SkiExpo
As seems to be the case these last years; going there without an shopping intent, so what's lef is trying to find out what's really new in the field from beneath all the hype pushed at you.
New player Amplid did catch my eye. Mainly by doing a matte black, fat twintip with shiny carbon text (just can't go wrong with that combination), but also by the fact they were surprisingly light for the size. Got to try to get a test ride sometime.

Still Empty
Going to be full of people tomorrow. Some crews seemed to have a long night still before them, before they are ready to meet the crowds.
SkiExpo Next
Went to put up the stand for Elämysmatkat, which I designed last year. Now that's recycling.
Experience Unboxed
Mikko's new CNC'd aluminium thing with an apple on it.
The trackpad took a bit getting used to, but the learning curve isn't too steep. I'm still not sure if it really is the best step forward for laptop UI's. A multitouch trackpad however would have been so much better. Or a multitouch tablet, while I'm at it.

The Pact
Went to check out the screening of Powderwhore's new tele flick: The Pact. Basically good stuff, nothing wrong technically, but a bit long and could have more variation. Anyway, a good way to get into the right mood for SkiExpo next week.

Friday Night Fun
Got out the climbing gear and helped out with some high flying installation work at Universum last night. It'll be interesting to see how the stuff that went up there eventually turns out in the play.

Tactility
Took out Lisa's iPod for a run the other day, and must say that as nice as the user interface is, Creatives little joystick beats it hands down in this field. When you run you become a very unstable platform for eye-finger coordination efforts, so you want to have some really concrete and moving interface telling you when stuff is happening.

Colour Coordination
A fresh breeze from the 90's, when all things anodised were cooler than ice. And we had TranzX components on out rides.
Been there, done that. Apparently someone still does.

Two Design Agencies
@Design Forum
Pentagon and Desigence showing off their stuff. Overall the exhibition was a bit of a letdown. These two had a decent effort, but some agencies really didn't seem to care much for their image.
Our office weren't exhibiting, so I can safely criticize others:)

Stereotypical Innovation Space
@Design Forum Finland, done by Fusion.
Soft carpet, Fatboy chairs, trendy magazines, whiteboard with Post-It note SWOT.
But does this setup really make a difference after all?

Sonera Design
Seems like Sonera has jumped on the consumers-as-designers bandwagon. But what's the implication of a service provider displaying hardware design ideas? How much leverage do they actually have, and are they stepping on the handset manufacturer's turf here?
