An old stencil was revealed under the walpaper, along with the fact that the walls have at some point been a shade of green that fades to yellow towards the roof. Don't think I'll go for recreating that style...

The Dungeon
Unexpectedly found the magic corner, and starting the pulling from it I managed to get down a significant amount of fiberglass wallpaper on two walls so far. Now I won't have to worry about anything being loose under the coat of plaster and paint, but getting rid of all the old flaky paint will take a while.
162kg's of Floor
What better way to begin the day than to carry it up to the fifth floor.
No, there's no elevator in this house.

More Fibreglass
Fibreglass weave keeps popping up at unexpected places in the bedroom. Maybe some previous owner was in the fibreglass business, or maybe it's just everywhere to keep the room together?
Watch the Bird
It's watching you.

Low Angle View
Pendolino restaurant car, going to Jyvälskylä yesterday. Seriously shaky and wobbly ride compared to the Shinkansen, even though they run about 100km/h faster than this one. If you end up standing, you'll find the window highly inconveniently at waist height.

Not Pretty
Looks like I'm the first person since the 1930's to actually scrape the old paint off before adding a new coat. And it sure does come off, in big pieces.

Let the Fun Begin
You want to be well covered when scraping old paint off the ceiling. Scaring the neighbours is a bonus.
All Clear
Moved myself and a bunch of stuff to the living room for the time being. Redoing pretty much all the surfaces in the bedroom up next on the agenda.

That Thing Again
Final post on Japan for this time, so scroll down if you are chronologically inclined.
Back in May I had some less fabulous things to say about the "one careful owner" A340-300 Finnair is running alongside their two newer ones. Well, naturally they had put the old bird on the Nagoya route to cheer me up. Good I brought a good book, as (again) the in-flight entertainment system failed pretty oddly around five hours into the flight. Maybe I'll stick with going to Tokyo in the future, just to avoid this specimen.

Front View
Another cool train feature, on the Nagoya Meitetsu line this time: Front facing live video with speed reading. I'd like to see this on faster trains too, thank you.
Convenience
Since I had some issues with window ledge space on Helsinki local trains a while back, here's an example of how it should be done from a JR West Series 700 Shinkansen.
Tokyo, Pretty AM
Eduring some sleep deprivation in return for cheaper flights to Nagoya and back. Just meant an extra Shinkansen ride there from Tokyo.
Excelsior Shibuya
Never thought of Japan as an espresso nation, but the stuff turned out by the Excelsior chain isn't half bad actually. This window seat looked some random Shibuya backstreet, so no lack of crowd to watch. The only downside is you can smoke in large parts of the cafes.
Cozo Christmas Party
Takumi -san and friends celebrated the first year of their design studio in Oome. That was two hours and three train changes away from my hotel, and still inside Tokyo. In Finland you'd pass about five cities in that amount of time. A wood workshop equipped with a full on professional bar is worth pretty much any amount of travel, however.
Tilt Screen
Since clamshell models are dominant, horisontal viewing requires odd and creative design solutions.
Christmas in Tokyo
This day started pretty early in Tokyo and as seen me back home via Nagoya. Anyway, back to the start of the trip: No white christmas in Tokyo (not that I expected it). Not much change from May, except it was cold and humid instead of hot and humid.
