We got to the airport early, after hearing much about the congested check in during the summer (what recession?). True there was a line stretching way over to the other departures hall, but the DIY kiosks and luggage drop desk were almost deserted. Took us all of about five minutes to get boarding passes and get rid or our bags, which of course created a problem of killing quite a lot of time...
Maybe flying is seen as a valuable enough investment that many people arent willing to trust it's success on a machine. Public transport seems to have a much higher rate of dealing with ticket vending and charging machines, which are essentially the same thing; Just the monetary value and commitment to schedule varies a bit.
